Services

Practicing self-advocacy at the Independent-Learning Center is a powerful way for students to reach new levels of accountability and responsibility.

For exceptional learners of today and the leaders of tomorrow, these specialized opportunities are led by a triple-licensed professional educator.

Academics

Self-advocacy mentoring & academic tutoring (K-12, all subjects)... Students obtain an understanding of academic expectations and requirements placed upon them so that they may move beyond them. Homework assignments are used as "exercises" to improve executive-functioning.

Practice: organizational skills, study skills, math, reading comprehension & retention, writing, communication, critical thinking and much more.

College Prep

Preparation and planning begins in eighth grade. With ILS, students learn to enjoy the process of taking responsibility for their goals. Formerly a daunting process, college prep. becomes an opportunity to showcase talent.

Craft a noteworthy track record of coursework and extracurriculars, learn about programs of interest at various campuses, fine-tune applications with exemplary essays (& topics), master the art of powerful recommendations, and develop an SAT/ACT study plan.

Music

ILS harnesses the power of music as a language to enhance patience, attention to detail, neatness, articulation and organization.

Beginning his piano playing career under the guidance of Ms. Vicki Diefenbacher, Richard developed a skillset to last a lifetime, winning first place in his one and only piano competition. Further pushing his development, Mr. William Perry Johnson instilled a confidence that propels Richard to this day.

ILS introduces the tool of piano... formally and as a supplement to academic tutoring.

Resource Time

Resource Time takes place in a group setting. The emphasis is surpassing academic expectations. Students move beyond homework concerns, putting their minds to work on creative and meaningful pursuits.  Rigorous study habits and authoritative skillsets are used to “master academics and practice independence.”

A unique opportunity for students to come together academically, socially, creatively, even professionally.

Chess

"Once kids are exposed to the instruction... once they get hooked, their desire to apply themselves soars. The ability to concentrate -- really concentrate -- takes a quantum leap the minute chess sinks in." -NYCHESS teacher John Kennedy

"Chess is the touchstone of the human intellect." -Goethe

Computer Literacy

Proficient use of technology is one of today's most valuable skills.

Well-versed in data management, productivity suites, creative-arts software and tele-communication, ILS offers students opportunities to create "digital footprints" (and portfolios) of substance!

Showcase interests and skills, connect with industry professionals, master your "domain."

Workforce Prep.

For young adults starting a career, boast your many achievements on a perfectly formatted and informative resumé; practice interpersonal skills and tactics to stand out professionally; ensure your "best self" shines through effortlessly.

- Develop an online "Intro & Contact" page

- Design and print original business cards

- Prepare for interviews & more

Homebound

"Homebound instruction" is required for students who miss school due to extended absence/s. Often, these absences are due to medical or disciplinary setbacks.

As assignments, quizzes and tests pile up, students often feel overwhelmed and can lose track of what is expected of them. ILS helps students maintain accountability through communication with teachers.  With supplemental tutoring, students appreciate fulfilling their responsibilities independently.

Enrichment

Common-core standards are framing today's learning-experience in schools.  Ensure that unique interests and innate skills of students are not left un- or under-developed...

• Independent-studies and research projects

• Tailored assignments, review & discussion

Special Needs

Experienced with caseloads of IEPs and 504 plans, ILS proudly offers feedback on (or private creation of) these important agreements.

With a licensed Learning & Behavioral Specialist, ILS helps students transform "boring" assignments into worthwhile opportunities to showcase talent.  ILS dismisses the term "learning disability" instead referring to the "learning differences" that everyone has.

Executive-Functioning

Executive-functioning includes skills such as managing assignments, creating and implementing plans (study-, research-, etc), inquiring about and keeping track of grades, initiating conversations with teachers and administrators (like counselors in charge of your schedule) and more...

Most importantly, these skills allow students to maintain an authoritative edge over academics so personal development may occur.

Assessment Reports

ILS is pleased to provide parents with reports on various data and observation.

Career inventories, learning-style assessments, personal and academic strengths and challenges... detailed write-ups are available as needed.

ILS is always developing new and creative ways to empower students through education. Through partnerships with families possessing diverse special needs, strengths and abilities, ILS is proud to be available and grateful for the opportunity.
